Getting a provisional licenceBefore you can learn to drive you will need to obtain a provisional driving licence.
Normally, for car drivers, the earliest date your provisional licence can become valid is your 17th birthday, however you can apply for the licence up to three months before your 17th birthday. The minimum age for driving cars is currently 17, but if you're getting
Disability Living Allowance at the higher rate (mobility component) then you can drive at 16.
If you are aged between 16 and 24, Motability, the scheme that gives people an opportunity to own or hire a car, may be able to offer financial support towards the cost of driving lessons. (Click here) Once you have passed your Theory Test you can then take your Practical Test.
